prof Kazimieras Baršauskas Ultrasound Research Institute

We are involved in many projects concerning various applications of ultrasonic techniques for space research, nuclear plants, aerospace industry, monitoring of various manufacturing processes. Our research teams are working in development of non-destructive testing techniques for composite materials, journal and sleeve bearings, components, used at nuclear plants, are creating non-invasive methods for medical applications.

  • The main area of interest covers development of new advanced ultrasonic measurement, imaging and non-destructive techniques for extreme conditions (high temperatures, strong radioactive radiation, high pressure and chemical activity), non-conventional applications of NDT, monitoring and quality control
  • The Institute’s staff possess specific knowledge and unique know-how on development of ultrasonic measurement techniques for non-conventional applications; ultrasonic long range testing techniques using ultrasonic guided waves; air-coupled NDT ultrasonic technologies; techniques of signal processing and modelling
  • The Institute‘s research activity is realised during long-term projects and contracts with Lithuanian and foreign companies, also in cooperation with other Lithuanian and foreign scientific research institutions
  • The innovative ultrasonic diagnostic technologies are based on fundamental and applied research exploiting acoustics, mathematical physics, materials science, numerical modelling, electronics, signal and image processing

Our mission

Development of cutting edge solutions for ultrasonic measurements and non-destructive testing for extreme conditions and non-conventional applications.

Vision

Be innovative, reliable and leading research centre, which offers high competence, quality and extensive knowledge in a field of ultrasonic measurements and non-destructive testing.

R&D and innovation activity objectives:

  1. Development of diagnostic and measurement techniques for extreme conditions
  2. Participation in local and international funding programmes
  3. Development of the smart and adaptive measurement techniques for industry
  • The ultrasound research in KTU is counting more than 60 years of activity. Ultrasound research activities were initiated by Professor Kazimieras Baršauskas, who founded Ultrasound Laboratory in 1960. In 1962 the Laboratory for industrial applications was established.
  • Total number of publications since the year of establishment exceeds 1,000 and together the Institute‘s staff hold over 150 patents. We are involved in many projects concerning various applications of ultrasonic techniques for space research, nuclear plants, aerospace industry, monitoring of various manufacturing processes, measurements under extreme conditions, development of non-destructive testing techniques for composite materials, journal and sleeve bearings, components, used at nuclear plants, medical applications and others.
  • We have created such unique instruments as the ultrasonic zirconium tube meter at Ignalina nuclear power plant, short distance meters at the electronic tube factory Ekranas, software for multichannel ultrasonic data acquisition and presentation in the Beloyarsk nuclear plant.
  • Research activity is conducted to orders and contracts with Lithuanian and foreign companies, also in cooperation with other Lithuanian and foreign scientific research institutions. KTU Ultrasound Research Institute is actively involved in international projects sponsored by EC: FP5 (1 project), FP6 (7 projects), FP7 (15 projects), Eurostars (2 projects) and H2020 (3 running projects).
